The short version: your school address is how YOOP knows who you are, and nobody else ever sees it. What another student can see is what you chose to put on a post, and the contact card you asked YOOP to hand over when somebody unlocks it.
1What YOOP keeps
The address you sign in with, and the school its domain resolves to. You are never asked to name your school and there is no list to pick it from — the address is the whole of it.
That address is also the whole of what YOOP says about you: every account here holds a working email address at a US school, checked when the account was made and checked again each year. Nothing else about anybody is checked — the board does not vet people and does not stand behind them, and an address says nothing about who reads it.
The posts you publish, the contact card on each of them, the unlocks you have made or received, and what each one cost.
The places you search for and publish from, as the town or venue each one landed on. When you type a street address, YOOP keeps a fingerprint of it — enough to recognise the same words next time, never enough to read them back — and not who typed it.
The complaints, reports and ratings you have given, along with any images you attached as evidence.
2What other people see
Your posts, including the price you stated. Never your address: the people you reach learn what is on your contact card and nothing more.
A post shows the town or venue each end landed on. Never an address you typed to find it.
Your contact card, and only somebody who has unlocked it — or somebody you have unlocked, because contact opened in one direction is open in both.
Nothing about a rating. The one you give is shown back to you, the board shows it to nobody, and it never becomes a number beside anybody’s name.
3Who else touches it
A mail provider, handed your address so it can deliver a sign-in code. A hosting provider, which runs the database the board is kept in. A browser check, asked only whether a sign-in request or an address search came from a browser and told nothing about who you are. And a place-lookup service, handed the words you typed when YOOP does not already know the place, and nothing about who typed them. No payment company is handed anything at all, because every unlock on this board is free today. If that ever changes, this page changes with it.
Each is handed what it needs for its own job and nothing else, and none of them is sold anything.
4Where place names come from
Towns come from the US Census Bureau. Names in other languages and time zones come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). Addresses are found through Geoapify, using OpenStreetMap data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
5How long it is kept
A post stays after its departure has passed, because it is a record of something that was on the board. Unlocks stay because they are the record of a contact card having been handed over.
Images attached to a complaint are kept somewhere no client can reach, shown to an operator through a link that expires, and given a keeping time when the complaint is resolved.
6What you can do about it
Take a post down, or withdraw its contact card, from your own posts screen. Both take effect at once and neither needs anybody’s permission.
